The Caleb Project: A Fresh Start in Phoenix, AZ

Pastor Kj Walker with VBS food donation

This September, Gateway Missions is partnering with Maryvale Church of the Nazarene in Phoenix, Arizona, on their Caleb Project. For three years, the church has been building twelve tiny houses on its property, and they are almost finished. Each home is meant for a man who has completed a faith-based recovery program and is ready for his next step in discipleship.

"Now give me this hill country." (Joshua 14:12)

The Reality of the Mission

Belvedere Apartments in Jackson, MS have been condemned.

The project takes its name from Caleb, the man in the Bible who saw possibilities when everyone else saw obstacles. Maryvale's neighbors know those obstacles well: homelessness, single-parent homes, and limited income.

Men referred from area recovery centers will live in these homes while they take part in training and serve others through the church. It's more than a roof. It's a place to grow in faith and leadership.

Criminologist John DiIulio has said that lasting change in struggling neighborhoods runs through "gospel-centered churches and faith-based ministries." That is exactly what Maryvale is doing.

How Gateway is Part of This Story

Our goal is to furnish at least one unit, at a cost of $2,073.85, so one man can walk into a home that is ready for him.

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Colossians 3:12)

How You Can Help

Give online under Missions or in the sanctuary on Sundays. Please also pray for the men who will live in these homes, for the Maryvale church family, and for the final stretch of the build.

Caleb chose the hard mountain and stayed to serve. Maryvale is doing the same, and we get to help.
